How to Install Addons on Garry's Mod

Adding addons lets you customise your Garry's Mod server. This guide explains how Garry's Mod handles them and walks through installing them safely.

How Garry's Mod handles addons

Garry's Mod content comes from Workshop addons. The cleanest way is a Workshop collection set with host_workshop_collection in your Startup, which makes clients download everything on join. You can also upload addons directly to garrysmod/addons.

Step by step

  1. Stop the server from the panel.
  2. Build a Workshop collection of the addons you want and copy its ID.
  3. Add the collection ID to your Startup, along with a Steam Web API key.
  4. Restart, then connect and confirm the content downloads.
  5. Install an admin mod such as ULX for managing your server.
  6. Start the server and watch the Console for load messages.

Keep them working

  • Update addons whenever the game updates, mismatched versions are the main cause of problems.
  • Players usually need the same content to join.
  • Add a few at a time so you can spot any that cause issues.
