Adding plugins or mods lets you customise your Minecraft server. This guide explains how Minecraft handles them and walks through installing them safely.
How Minecraft handles plugins or mods
Minecraft has two add-on systems. Plugins run on a Paper or Spigot server and go in the plugins folder. Mods run on a Forge or Fabric server and go in the mods folder. You cannot mix the two, and every file must match your server's Minecraft version.
Step by step
- Stop the server from the panel.
- Switch your server type if needed (Paper for plugins, Forge or Fabric for mods) from the Startup tab.
- Download add-ons that match your exact version.
- Upload them to the right folder using the File Manager or SFTP.
- For mods, make sure every player installs the same mods and loader.
- Start the server and watch the Console for load messages.
Keep them working
- Update plugins or mods whenever the game updates, mismatched versions are the main cause of problems.
- Players usually need the same content to join.
- Add a few at a time so you can spot any that cause issues.
