How to Reduce Lag on Your Minecraft Server

Lag usually comes down to resources or settings. This guide covers the changes that make the biggest difference on a Minecraft server.

Check your usage first

Open your server page and watch the CPU and RAM graphs while players are on. If either sits near 100 percent, the simplest fix is moving up to the next plan.

Tune the server

  • Use Paper instead of vanilla, it is much faster under load.
  • Lower view-distance and simulation-distance to 6 to 8.
  • Pre-generate your world so exploration does not cause lag spikes.
  • Remove plugins and mods you do not use.
  • Pick a plan with enough RAM for your modpack (heavy modpacks need 6GB or more).

Keep it healthy

  • Schedule a daily restart to clear memory.
  • Remove plugins or mods you do not use.
  • Keep the game and add-ons updated.
