Adding mods lets you customise your Terraria server. This guide explains how Terraria handles them and walks through installing them safely.
How Terraria handles mods
For mods you run a tModLoader server instead of the vanilla server. Mods are enabled through the in game Mod Browser or by editing enabled.json. A vanilla server cannot use mods.
Step by step
- Stop the server from the panel.
- Switch the server to tModLoader from the Startup tab.
- Subscribe to mods in the tModLoader Mod Browser, or upload them.
- Enable the mods you want, then reload.
- Make sure players run tModLoader with the same mods.
- Start the server and watch the Console for load messages.
Keep them working
- Update mods whenever the game updates, mismatched versions are the main cause of problems.
- Players usually need the same content to join.
- Add a few at a time so you can spot any that cause issues.
