Adding mods lets you customise your Valheim server. This guide explains how Valheim handles them and walks through installing them safely.
How Valheim handles mods
Valheim mods run through BepInEx. Once BepInEx is installed, mods downloaded from Thunderstore go in the BepInEx/plugins folder. Most mods need to be installed on the clients as well as the server.
Step by step
- Stop the server from the panel.
- Install BepInEx from the Startup tab.
- Download mods from Thunderstore.
- Upload them to
BepInEx/pluginson the server. - Ask every player to install the same client side mods so they can join.
- Start the server and watch the Console for load messages.
Keep them working
- Update mods whenever the game updates, mismatched versions are the main cause of problems.
- Players usually need the same content to join.
- Add a few at a time so you can spot any that cause issues.
