How to Install Mods on Project Zomboid

Adding mods lets you customise your Project Zomboid server. This guide explains how Project Zomboid handles them and walks through installing them safely.

How Project Zomboid handles mods

Project Zomboid mods come from the Steam Workshop. You add the Workshop IDs to WorkshopItems and the matching Mod IDs to Mods in your server settings. Both lists must agree or mods will not load.

Step by step

  1. Stop the server from the panel.
  2. Find mods on the Workshop and note both the Workshop ID and the Mod ID (the mod page lists both).
  3. Add the Workshop IDs to WorkshopItems and the Mod IDs to Mods.
  4. Restart and check the Console that each mod loads.
  5. Make sure every player subscribes to the same mods.
  6. Start the server and watch the Console for load messages.

Keep them working

  • Update mods whenever the game updates, mismatched versions are the main cause of problems.
  • Players usually need the same content to join.
  • Add a few at a time so you can spot any that cause issues.
